In the "RIAS meeting place", "Manhattan" or "skirt of over RIAS" he chatted over Pop music, doziert. It represented a reference person before the microphone for the listeners, no anonymous Blabla voice, but a broadcast personality. Its broadly varied Insider benefitted it thereby just as as its journeys into its "second homeland" New York. There it had a dwelling, which it used every few months in Greenwich Village (Greenwich Ave. Nr.55 apartment 3). There it sucked the newest music trends (Barry loved Salsa, Tamla Motown, Donna buzzers, Soul and everything that surrounded itself with Glamour, particularly the Popmusik from the USA), often went into the cinema, into shows, into Discotheken and read a great deal technical literature. He buys in the USA the newest disks and the first portable CD Player. It was fascinated by the
clear sound of this technical wonderwork. Later it verkabelte the Player with the mixer in the studio. When once into his apartment one broke in, it was annoyed above all, which its video cassettes were geklaut. New York was for Barry Graves an inspiration. It was fascinated of the city and it offered to it again and again new material for further productions. Skirt encyclopedia
It had the conditions and the knowledge which was necessary, in order to publish 1973 the "skirt encyclopedia". Already longer than 1 year and investigated Graves and the Siegfried Schmidt Joos at still today the valid manual of the Rock/Pop music, originating from Thuringia, worked. Joos (at that time MIRROR editor) got the offer to write an encyclopedia. However was however not to be realized, then it looked for a partner that is competent, which has knowledge and this is able to convert also in writing. Barry fulfilled all these requirements shining. After previous arrangement first everyone wrote its part around it then from the partner against-read to let. If necessarily then still another correction addition took place. Already two years later (1975) there were the 2nd revised edition. No later book concerning the popular music, which did not specify the skirt encyclopedia in the source listing. The encyclopedia is today very successful until and each music fan should it in the cabinet be located have. Barry was this encyclopedia obviously much because of the heart. A listener reports: "once he (note: Barry Graves) something then in a general manner drew by lots and said to the listener: You a skirt encyclopedia won, I may not say of whom that are not, because for its own books one is not to make an advertisement." Barry Graves and the press
Barry always danced on different weddings. It wrote for the "evening", the "world", "taz", to "Zitty", the "morning mail", the "tip", the "daily mirror", the "time", the "star" and
the "mirror". Barry Graves was one of the best connoisseurs of the citizens of Berlin culture scene. Rock over RIAS
In the summer 1975 then a further bass drum impact with the loose transmission row "skirt of over RIAS". Together with Olaf Leitner, Walter Bachauer ( 1989) castle hard intoxication (impact things/singing "Bel Ami"), Uwe Wohlmacher and illustren guests naeherbrachten the moderators to the listeners in loose atmosphere the skirt music. Also this transmission was taken over, like some different also, by further transmitters (NDR). Barry Graves participated from the outset! It invented the legendary "is enough nights". Thousands remained until early around four at the radio.3 1978 to the film festivals, became acquainted with Rik De Lisle Barry. Rik knew hardly a word German and Barry Graves it later helped to seize in the RIAS foot. "we have", then Rik remembers, "1984 the first time together worked. I had at that time ne transmission "skirt with Rik" and afterwards came Barry with "Country time". Also "we made skirt of over RIAS" few times together ".4 Barry privately

Graves was very industriously and ' ne quantity made money. Its plates he procured himself in Berlin probably mainly with WOM in the Augsburger STR in value home. There there was the Playlist on demand also for transmission. With Griesbach beside of old alliance likewise the head office in the Joachimstaler is it to have availed itself. Activities
There were late times, there ran its transmissions parallel on two transmitters. The 12 teilige series "the American dream", with the sub-title "story from the country of the heroes and legends" 1985 (nine parts were produce/sent with the RIAS), was taken over by other radio stations (part of six was concerned with "Coca Cola", part of nine with "wolkenkratzer", another with "Disney"). Particularly RIAS the Discodrom from 6,-12 August 1979 became the Tummelplatz for Discofreaks. In seven nights a Marathon in each case from 23:00 to 4:15 o'clock presented Barry Graves, Siegfried Schmidt Joos and Uwe Wohlmacher of everything about Disco. They wanted to pack everything on the disk table, which gives it to the topic to Disco. To hear WKTU were also live of attendance in new Yorks most famous Disco Dorado, the "studio 54 " beside cutouts of popularUS Discosender WBLSand. "more than 35 hours can become the Nachtschwaermer in the Disco sound smolder towards and thereafter perhaps dead tired and exhausted be, but they will then have experienced everything over its body and stomach music".always
mehrgleisig drove, became 5 that Barry already mentioned. So it had transmissions at RIAS times still like "lake you more later, Aligator", "studio 89", "RIAS Country", "California", "Manhattan", "Kudamm", "RIAS Discothek" and "RIAS Discodrom". Graves produced a tenth-hasty series in the RIAS "Elvis Presley King" in the radio play format (May 1984). He arranged the documentary film "the 24-Stunden-Stadt" 1984 (town center around the Clock)(together with Waldemar Overkaemping), in which it described the citizens of Berlin Underground and Ausflipp perspective. A film with which he 1985 even on the citizen of Berlin film festivals was present. Barry cooperated in television plays, made interviews, wrote film criticisms and books, a Elvis Presley Biografie "Elvis - King of the lost hearts" 1985 and the novel "Vicky and Nicky" 1986 (Bild)(auch as 90 min. color film). Barry Graves reported on Turkish Breakdancer just as competently as on "androgyne currents in the popular culture". It wrote steven play mountain and the Cotton club over Donald ducks, in New York. Graves had participated in several television broadcasts (among other things "music extra 3" in the WDR).15 The end in the RIAS
When in the RIAS program the large reform took place, it resisted vehement. It supported, which remained some the innovative things. Rik De Lisle became 1985 music boss of rias2 as "alibi Ami". "the Ami made enterprise. Under De Lisle guidance was blown up 1985 the program from rias2 to the complete tag music transmitter. Renowned colleagues such as Barry Graves, Olaf Leitner, Christian count left the first citizen of Berlin Dudelsender escape-like. De Lisle defended its concept vehement. Broadcast must have the ability to adapt to the listener habits all the same whether it pleases the colleague."9 rias2 then under the direction from Schiwy to the all day Pop wave one restructured. Still today (2007)verteidigt Rik his reform, "we make program for the listeners, not for the Mitarbeiter"*(*Gedaechtnisprotokoll). Barry (when free author/coworker with the RIAS) did not want to take part in in it no more. It had large difficulties after the program reform (30.9.1985), it came 1985 to the controversy. It was fired by Professor Herbert Kundler (RIAS program boss , deceased 19.10.2004) from the RIAS. Radio B 1
In addition came, which it engaged itself at the same time much for the first citizen of Berlin Kabelsender"B1 " together with "general manager " WolfgangNeuss, lord Knud (Knud Kuntze), Holly Jane Rahlens, Ilja judge , Jonas Ziegler (picture right during the transmission "skirt OF the week"), Waldemar Overkaemping (deceased 1991) and Heinz Juergen Bernhard (deceased 2003). There it wanted to let revive to be "studio 89" again. The transmitter failed after approximately one three-quarter year. "the transmitter was to be heard stop only in the cable. And who had 1985/86 already cable...? Drivers could not hear us also. The listener shank was already quite clear."10 "I must honestly say which I for the private radio wait. The private radio in Germany does not have to become like the American. One could conceive it as in Great Britain. With the public the administration grows too strongly."11 Barry was once asked, what for it radio is: "radio making is complete single, on the left of a record player, on the right of a record player, in the center the moderator!". SFB
1986 came Barry into the office of SFB 2 music editor Helmut Lehnert. Barry was for H. Lehnert a model "... and was suddenly located it in the door and asked, Helmut I wuerd ' completely gladly for you works?"6 starting from 1987 it continued its so far very successful transmission row "studio 89" (ran approx. seven years), under the name "studio 92" (ran until 1990) with the SFB 2. Quotation: "it thereby the knowledge for many years benefits to" the RIAS Dance show ". The cult show into the citizen of Berlin radio stations. A certain Barry Graves, his indication American, flew the more frequent one to New York, took up the "Saturday Night Dance party" and specified it 1 week later in the RIAS. In addition one must know, which gives it in N.Y.C. to 120 radio stations. That was simply only ingenious, in Europe lives and knows which in the world for sounds runs." Also with the SFB Barry had several transmissions, partly at the same time. There there was "city radio", "sound checks" and "Downtown". Seven years was it with the SFB talc shows made and thereby was loved or hated. Not rarely schmiss it people from the line, if it were not their opinion. Report of a listener: "it could increase there often correctly purely, for example as it once a whole week over the Telekom gelaestert long again and again and explained that it was much better in America and more cheaply to telephone. Or that it lasts with the German post office for weeks to subscribe a magazine from the USA whereas UPS needs only two days." ... and further: "once I, I thought would have cross-examined myself, when he said in a respectable round of talks: ... well the Ehmke of the SPD is in things Berlin question anyway the all-largest Kotzbrocken "... Barry said also once, "... the verlogenen autosalesman voices".7 apparent it could take the liberty such a thing already times. Often it duke over authorities, over colleagues talked it however only rarely. Up to a certain point and wanted the program bosses could still cover him. It seemed, remembers to Lehnert: "... which it prescribed for me, as to be made I would have radio".6 it annoyed Berlin and Brandenburg completely once in the evening very much and gene FFS. It drove it up to the point. That could be done so far, which even listener inside at the telephone cried. Helmut Lehnert (boss Radio4U and Fritz): "there I it to me then to the chest took and are gone to coffee with it to drink into a citizen of Berlin coffee. I had difficulties because I thought, which he does not leave simply fallen if I with him about it talked himself and it will in-soap me again from the front to in the back with its mouth work. It could talk a half hour without point and comma. I also let it talk and thereafter two to three things to it said and then he said: Helmut you is right, I becomes it never again does." 6 that impressed and further it (Lehnert) very much: "I had in the last three years regularly still contact over fax although it between intelligence, insolence and humor varied. That could be done always up and down was however always brilliantly formulated ".it intended 6 to make once a pophistorische transmission. To it did not come unfortunately any longer, even if some transmissions were produced already. "I admire only one colleague with the SFB, Juliane Bartel of the SFB- Zeitfunk. This woman is broadcast, it is alive, impresses to me ".11 Radio 4U/Fritz
1990 were created a youth wave with the SFB, radio 4U and Barry participated again also. On the one hand it continued its "studio 89" transmission under the name "Big Beat", on the other hand filled it at the same time its program planner with transmissions as "four after eleven", "four after twelve" and "Kaminsky4". Although radio was expensively in the maintenance, however quite successful 4U not particularly, the SFB stopped the wave at the end of of 1992 for reasons of the pool of two youth transmitters. Starting from 1992 it moderated B2 transmissions with radio like "radio Rock'n roll" and "night club". In March 1993 then Barry's last radio station: Fritz. If it sat in such a way before the microphone, the read eyeglasses always far in front, he had often an age-old school booklet with notes thereby. Sometimes it seemed to be correctly shy. At least it worked occasionally in such a way. "to this small note booklet I remember darkly, knows however not, what in it." 13 with Techno, particularly with badly made, he got along apparently not so well. It regarded Techno as a promiseful development, which commercialized obviously appreciably and flattened then however, so that probably its initial enthusiasm for this new current (all new fascinated him) changed to disappointment. In the Sat 1 transmission "Einspruch"(17.05.1994)", he had made himself also once air. Its split relationship to this music form expressed itself even if it then in its transmission of a "artist, who works here, who I do not want to call more near"8 talked and Marusha, which had at that time a giant hit with "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", meant. He found the piece grottenschlecht and a Verhunzung of the original of Judy country. Naturally it played the Dance music, which for important it found in its Dance transmission, which was then continued to studio 92 on SFB as Big Beat on Friday (with Radio4U) and late sound guards on Friday (with Fritz), also only. It was, as previously mentioned very consistent during the conversion of its conceptions and would have it never certified that determines other people or a computer the music selection, and went even to the program bosses with its opinions making program on the nerves. Apparently Barry had to separate increasingly problems from the music to, which he played and loved from beginning of his radio work. The time had changed itself, it was the 90'er, new music styles developed and Barry turned out increasingly into the tightness. This became apparent in the partly audible grind. One could do mine, it held not with the time step. It worked increasingly verbittert and frustrates, partly embarrassingly. This damaged its call at the end unfortunately as moderator substantially! Undisputed, Graves was a pioneer in the area radio work. Humanly however it often often failed, finally too. That brought in negative criticisms for it. That was not any more here the unencumbered plaudernde Barry Graves of before 15 or 20 years. With Fritz it had on Wednesdays still the transmission "Blue Moon" with which it in the 8.Juni 1994 of the radio said good-bye. A listener: "I do not find in the last transmission sounded myself it also more so well, therefore the transmission with him probably only one hour" went. The true reason was, which it broke down weldingbathed in the studio. It sent still another last message: "people, everything in order, but leave to me little time now!". Then it was not to be achieved nowhere more, also in its citizens of Berlin dwelling in the federal avenue. Helmut Lehnert strove in vain for contact. "if one it otherwise something on the STARTING FROM spoke or faxte, announced themselves to Barry, as soon as he could. But now nothing multi came. The next, which I heard of it, was the death message ". Its illness had strongly added to it. It took vacation, from which it never returned more. The end
At that time it meant also completely clearly that it should not be said that Barry died, because he would have wanted it in such a way. I (editor) kept me for many years by it, but today, after over 13 years find I it at the time it to mention here (still to it, where it is also written in newspaper articles and forums). Barry Graves was schwul and died at AIDS. Calculated in a time, since the radio landscape in Germany began to become contentwise thinner had it us abandoned. Armin Amler to Barry's death: "thus, the Barry had only times correctly begun straight, when it died - due to its own life-style"2 Olaf Leitner: "the city has a world-turned, marvelously exaltierten culture journalist less. Know does she, whom there she lost?" 16 Rik De Lisle says to the parting: "its voice will be missing to us" |
I would still gladly be with you remained but, where the life no more strength has death is a release
After Barry's death was sold its complete disk collection by parents. After my information to the SFB, which bought up everything. Death there were ten years after Barry's 2004 a Gedenkfete in the citizens of Berlin "bread factory", with which also Uwe Wohlmacher and Olaf Leitner present were. Feature parts and a film were specified, read out cutouts from its book and offered an oil picture for the auction. A further intending transmission gave it at the 8.Januar 2006 in the Germany radio. Dargeboten of Rainer Czekalski, I remind Graves Lieblingstoningeneur, the radio life of the Barry Graves one after-drew.
